How can I tell what the metal type is?

Somewhere on the item will be a stamp. They could read as follows;
  • 22k - this would be 22k gold
  • 18k, 18kp or 750 - these stand for 18k gold
  • 14k, 14kp or 585 - these stand for 14k
  • 10k or 10kp - this stands for 10k gold
  • Plat or PT - these stand for platinum
  • SS or 950 - these stand for sterling silver
  • GF - this stands for gold filled (generally little or no value)
  • GP - this is gold plated (generally little or no value)
  • RG - this stands for rolled gold (generally little or no value)
Should I include an appraisal or receipt from my purchase in the box?

The more documentation the better, you could make a photo copy and send it with the item/s.

How do I pack the items?

Because the items will eventually be melted, there is no need to wrap them individually. You could put the items in a zip lock bag with tissue around it. The package should not rattle too much once it is closed. Some shippers might think your shipment is already broken and not accept the package.

What if there is no stamp on the item I am sending?

Please fill out the written description and we will test the metal and fill in the needed information. We will then calculate the value based on the metal type and email you a corrected appraisal.

What if I change my mind?

All items will be processed as they come in. In the event we can catch the item as it comes in we should be able to set it aside. However once it has been processed it would be near impossible to return. We will have to address this on case by case basis. If you were local and we had not destroyed the piece you could pick it up. If you wanted it mailed back there would be postage and handling fee involved.

What if I don’t get a letter of donation from my charity, church, or foundation?

The automated email you receive from us at the time we receive your goods is the same notification your charity or church group will receive. We can not issue a letter of donation for them. This must be issued by the non-profit. You must contact them for the letter of donation. All efforts have been made to insure that the paperwork flows effortlessly. This question is more for the very rare occasion that this might happen.

What if the value I state is wrong?

If the value you list is too low we will correct it. This could be that you thought the ring was silver, when in fact it is gold. The reverse is true. If you have overstated the value we will lower it to the market value. In any case we will hold these items for a few days to ensure that you have time to request the item back.

Do I need to have a return receipt?

You don’t have to have a return receipt on your shipment. However, the package should be insured for the full value.

What happens if UPS or US Mail lose my package?

You will need to file a claim with the respective shipper. Your loss will be limited to the amount you insured the package. So, if you do not declare a value you will not be compensated.

How much can I donate?

You can donate as much as you like, and as often as you wish. You can send silver, gold, or platinum items all in the same box.

Can I split my donation?

No, the shipment should be for one charity only. However, if you would like to send a second shipment, and make a donation to a second charity you can. Just fill out a separate online form and follow all the shipping instructions.

What if I can’t make out the stamp on the item?

We will test the metal and allow the proper deductions for the item(s). It is best to put unknown on the description rather than guess.

Who determines the value of my items?

We will confirm the value of the item(s) being sent in. In many cases, donors understate the values on some of their items. You are entitled to a deduction based on the fair market value of every item. A jewelry expert will be testing and appraising each item.

Should I insure the shipment?

It is recommended that the package be insured for the value stated on our calculator. If not insured, and becomes lost or stolen, then you will not be compensated for the contents. Furthermore, if the package does not arrive, there will be no deduction for a donation. The items must reach us to insure that you get your donation letter.

How much money will my donation generate?

Every item is different. The values are determined by the amount of precious metal in each item. We total these values and write a check for 75% of the metal value. If you donate a class ring with a synthetic stone in the middle we will calculate the weight of the stone and deduct the weight from the final price. If the item has diamonds or other precious stones then we will also apply these values to the check being written.

What is the difference between market value and melt?

There is a large difference between retail value and melt. Retail value is the original price the store lists. Melt price is simply the value of the precious metal.

Can I just mail in my donation without filling in the online forms?

No, the beauty of this program is how simple it works. The donation travels through our system seamlessly. Once you have filled out the online form all notifications happen via email with the exception of the check. We have set this up to save time and that time translates into more money going to your charity.

How do I know the value of my donation?

You could start by listing the information that was on your sales receipt. It should have the metal type and the price paid along with the year purchased. This program works similar to a car donation program. In that you are entitled to the blue book value of the item for a write off. So, if you send in a pair of gold earrings and one has been stepped on the value of your donation will be calculated from the ½ pair. Yet the amount paid your charity will be determined from both pieces.

What if I donated an item that has diamonds or precious stones?

We will calculate the value of the stones and make the appropriate payment to the charity you have chosen.

How long after you receive my donation will I get notified of its value?

You will receive a confirmation of the value from us in two working days from the time we receive your items.

When will my church, charity, or non-profit foundation receive money from my donation?

They will receive a check for the items received at least once a month regardless of the amount. In the cases where there is a lot of revenue generated we may elect to send two checks in the same month.

How does my donation work for tax deduction purposes?

When you are making a donation of an item to your charity, church, or non-profit foundation, this is being done at the fair market value of those items. You are allowed to deduct this fair market value from your taxes. The designated charity will issue you a receipt for the correct value of your item/s. They will also have us process the metal and make the appropriate payment to them. It is important to remember that some of the items have no resale value. A class ring from 1970, a chain or earring that could not be repaired are just some examples. Yet, they do have significant donation value and benefits for your charity.

How do I know that my charity, church or non-profit foundation received the money from my donation?

We have instituted an area of the site that the charity can go into and view the status of all donations. This is a password protected area and can only be viewed by those with access. The emails that you receive from us are also sent to them at the same time. On the email you receive from us will be the contact person at your charity, church, or non-profit that is responsible.

Can I donate just one item?

Yes, this is the purpose of this program. All those small or single items will add up. Most people just don’t know what to do with the items they have.

What do I do if I have an expensive watch or piece of jewelry to donate?

If the item has a resale potential then we will explore that for your charity. The goal is to raise as much money for your charity, church, or non-profit as possible. Most items will not be able to be resold. However, for those items that have a greater value by keeping them intact, we will let the church, charity, or non-profit foundation tell us what they would like. Items that would fall into this category would be, fine watches like Rolex, antique pins, rings, or, pendants. There will be others, but use these as a guide post.

What happens to my information?

Your information will only be shared with the charity, church, or non-profit foundation to which you are donating. If you make donations to more than one, the information will not be cross shared. One charity will not know what the other has received. We will not use, rent, lease, or sell any of your information. We do NOT spam. Your church, charity, or non-profit might to choose to have us contact you for other programs they might be running, but we at www.GoldDonation.com, a division of ThisIsJewelry.com, will not contact you without direction from the group to which you have donated.

Why is their a 25% difference between the melt value and what is being paid?

The 25% is to run this program. We have automated this program to keep the costs as low as possible and send as much money to the charity as possible. When melting gold there is a small loss plus and percentage for processing the metal. This program has been designed to have us break even on our costs. If you look at other donation programs like cars, the percentage is ranging from 30% - 45%. In many cases, customers that are donating the precious metal are also sending their tax savings on to their charity as they receive it.
